One of BVU’s core missions is to contribute to the development of individual institutions and to strengthen the virtual education sector as a whole. This is achieved through a range of activities such as:

  • The  institutional evaluation programme

  • The Management Seminar , which is offered to newly-appointed senior university leaders.

  • The Quality Culture Project , which will  start in 2005 .

  • The  Virtual Community Management workshops which are thematic workshops for senior heads of academia, such as heads of administration and research.

  • Promoting good practice and the development of joint degrees.

These activities are all geared to developing the institutional capacity for change, through improved leadership, management systems, internal quality culture and processes.

There are several major lessons that the BVU  has drawn from these activities. Virtual Universities are keenly interested in developing their capacity to change and to improve so long as they are provided with an environment which respects academic culture and relies on peer-to-peer exchange. International co-operation is fruitful and enriching: diversity in cultures, languages, etc., is a richness rather than an obstacle to dialogue and promotes, in a flexible way, convergence and harmonisation.

These activities have helped:

  • To demonstrate virtual  universities' awareness that they must take responsibility for their internal quality processes in order to both promote their autonomy and fulfill demands for accountability.
